Society of American Archivists Recognizes VT State Archivist Tanya Marshall

Secretary of State Jim Condos is pleased to announce the recognition of Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA) Director Tanya Marshall by the Society of American Archivists (SAA). Established in 2011, the emerging leader award recognizes work of broad merit to the profession and demonstrated leadership qualities.

Secretary of State Jim Condos noted that Ms Marshall is only the second recipient of this prestigious award, adding that “Since Tanya joined the staff in 2005, she has consistently demonstrated strong planning, managerial, and collaborative skills. Her work in all three branches of government has great potential for achieving the long sought improved accountability and transparency of Vermont government.”

Former state archivist Gregory Sanford, who nominated Ms Marshall for the award, said that “Tanya’s ability to conceptualize and implement ways to structure and manage information has received international praise and is being considered as a model by several professional organizations.”

Ms Marshall is an appointee to the Advisory Committee on the Rules of Public Access to Court Records. She was a leader in establishing a collaborative framework for VSARA and the Department of Information and Innovation to address records issues in a digital world. Ms Marshall also oversaw the consolidation of Vermont’s records management program with the state archives. In addition to her Vermont work Ms Marshall is vice-president of the National Association of Government Archives and Records Administrators; serves on the executive committee of the Council of State Archivists; and is a member of a standards committee on records and information management with ARMA International, a professional organization for records and information managers.

In announcing the award the SAA noted that Ms Marshall brings a “unique combination of vision and in-depth knowledge of the archival enterprise, along with a collaborative spirit that clearly marks her as an emerging leader.”

Jim Condos is Vermont’s Secretary of State.
