Agency of Natural Resources to Hold Public Hearings on West Mountain WMA

The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources is updating the management plan for West Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Essex County. The agency will hold public hearings to allow stakeholders to provide input on updates to the plan.

Since 1999, the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources has managed West Mountain WMA for conservation and public access, and has managed a public access easement on adjacent lands now belonging to the Plum Creek Timber Company. This complex project has involved collaboration with partner organizations including The Nature Conservancy, Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, Vermont Land Trust, and Plum Creek, as well as numerous local and state constituent groups.

At nearly 23,000 acres, West Mountain is the largest wildlife management area in Vermont. This wildlife management area is a vast land of bogs and evergreens and is known for its remote character and large moose population.

Doug Morin, state lands biologist for the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, is coordinating the effort for the agency. “We encourage everyone who regularly uses these lands to attend these meetings and provide us with your comments and concerns,” said Morin. “We rely on input from the public to guide this process.”

Morin will give a brief presentation that will explain the update process and will review the last thirteen years of management activities on the lands. He will then open the meeting up for questions and comments.

The meetings will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the following locations:

Tuesday, June 11 at Brighton Elementary School

Thursday, June 13 at Lyndon State College in the ASAC Building.
