3SquaresVT Program Recipients Eligible for Benefits to Replace Food Lost During Recent Wind Storm

The Department for Children and Families has begun processing requests from 3SquaresVT recipients to compensate for food lost during the recent wind storm. Recipients are eligible to have a portion or all of their October benefit replaced, depending on the value of the food they lost.

The deadline for requesting replacement benefits is November 8, 2017. Households who want to ask for replacement benefits should call 1-800-479-6151 to speak with a Benefit Programs Specialist who can process their request, or go to their local Economic Services district office to file a request.

Power outages affect food security due to food spoilage. It is important to remember that for food to be safe to eat, it needs to be maintained at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below in a refrigerator, or 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below in a freezer. If your food has been above these temperatures for four hours or more, your food could be unsafe to eat and pose a serious health risk to you and your family.

"We are pleased we are able to offer some relief during this time of stress, when many Vermonters still don't know when they will have their power turned back on" stated Sean Brown, Deputy Commissioner of Economic Services, "situations like this create more stress on already struggling Vermonters."

Hunger Free Vermont is a statewide advocacy group that addresses hunger and malnutrition in Vermont. "As power is slowly getting restored to many Vermont homes and communities, it's important to get the word out about this helpful food resource for our most vulnerable Vermonters" explains Marissa Parisi, Executive Director of Hunger Free Vermont.
