The Vermont Trails and Greenways Council (VTGC) will be holding the fifth annual Vermont Trail Symposium on Saturday, October 15th 2011. The Trail Symposium will take place at the Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, Vermont. The event is geared toward trail enthusiasts, trail managers, trail builders and land managers interested in developing, fostering, or better understanding trail recreation in Vermont. The symposium will run all day Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The theme of this year’s Vermont Trail Symposium is “Trails: Central to Vermont.” Staff from Vermont Forests Parks and Recreation, the Green Mountain National Forest, and Vermont Youth Conservation Corps will be on hand, as well as professional trail builders and representatives from a wide array of Vermont trails organizations.
The first half of the day will feature a number of informative sessions covering topics such as Vermont’s Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan, The Vermont Trail Collaborative, and Vermont’s Trail Ethic. Following lunch (included in the registration fee) the group will move to the Three Stallions Inn trail system for field trainings and activities covering topics like “Trail Planning and Layout”, “Flood Damage Repair”, and “Using Native Timber for trail projects.” Patrick Kell of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association (VMBA) will also be leading a mountain bike ride in the afternoon. There will be a display area featuring trails organizations from throughout the state and their work, and time to share your past, current, or future trail projects with others. It will be a great opportunity to learn how to get more involved with your favorite trails and Vermont’s many trail organizations. Experts in grant writing, trail design, layout, trail construction, and policy will be on hand. Awards will be given for excellent trail work achievements in Vermont.
For information, registration, and a complete list of events visit the Vermont Trails & Greenways website at www.vermonttrailsandgreenways.org, or call Walter Opuszynski at (802)498-4506. Registration is $35 for members of the VTGC and $40 for non-members. Participants registering online before September 23rd can deduct $5 from the registration fee. Anyone that participated in a Vermont Trail Crew during the 2011 field season can register for $20. Hope to see you there!
