Canvassing Committee Certifies Election Results

Statewide canvassing committee certifies results of Vermont’s presidential primary

Montpelier. The Statewide Canvassing Committee met at 10:00 a.m. March 11th at the Office of the Secretary of State to review the election returns, certify the results of the presidential primary, and announce the winners of the presidential primaries.

The Statewide Canvassing Committee is composed of the Secretary of State and the chair of the state committee of each major political party or his/her designee. Presidential Primary for the State of Vermont, March 4, 2008

In accordance with the provisions of 17 V.S.A. § 2607, we have met and canvassed the returns of votes for the President of the United States cast at the March 4, 2008 Presidential Primary in Vermont as filed in the Office of the Secretary of State. (Winners Bold*)

VOTING STATISTICS

2. Total votes counted 196,576

3. Votes cast, Democratic Party 155,279 79.0

4. Votes cast, Liberty Union Party 462 0.2

5. Votes cast, Republican Party 40,120 20.4

6. Absentee votes cast 26,756 13.6

**This number is inflated due to statutorily mandated delay in removing names of persons who have moved to another voting district, but who have not notified the clerk in writing of the change. (National Voting Rights Act of 1993)
