The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is pleased to announce the opening of the 2011 application period for the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP). The VMLRP is a federally funded program that will pay up to $25,000 each year towards qualified educational loans of eligible veterinarians who agree to serve in designated veterinarian shortage areas for a period of three years. Vermont’s designated shortage areas approved for the 2011 application cycle are the geographical area comprised of Orleans, Caledonia, eastern Lamoille and northern Washington counties; and southeast Vermont including Windham, Windsor, eastern Bennington and eastern Rutland counties.
Qualified veterinarians must be willing to provide veterinary services to owners of cattle, poultry, small ruminants and/or swine in the qualifying geographical areas for a minimum of 30 percent of the work week in order to qualify for program. The application period for the 2011 award cycle is open until July 8, 2011, and awards will be made to successful applicants in September 2011. The United States Department of Agriculture will also be offering live webinars to veterinarians interested in applying to the VMLRP this year.
