The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club invite all youth hunters to participate in the fourth annual Vermont Youth Hunting Memories Contest.
“We are looking for your hunting stories,” said Fish and Wildlife’s Hunter Education Coordinator Chris Saunders. “You can enter even if you did not harvest an animal.”
Young hunters simply submit a short essay describing his or her time in the field on a hunt. The essay should describe why hunting is important to them, and must include a story of one of their hunting experiences. Criteria that will be judged include: ethics, landowner relations, appreciation of wildlife, respect for our hunting heritage, hunting skills, and family values. Entrants are encouraged to send in their hunting photos along with their story.
While deer hunting is synonymous with hunting in Vermont, hunting stories highlighting the young hunter’s adventures in any of the state’s diverse hunting opportunities, such as gray squirrel, rabbits, grouse, ducks and geese, turkey, black bear, moose are all eligible and encouraged.
The top ten entries chosen will win a set of special prizes from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Additionally, the Vermont Big Game Trophy Club will select one grand prize winner. Prize details will be provided later. Winners will be announced during the Yankee Sportsman Classic Show, January 14 - 16, 2011 in Essex. Prizes will be awarded Saturday January 15th at the show.
Submissions are property of the department and cannot be returned. The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and Vermont Big Game Trophy Club reserve the right to publish photos and essays. Submissions must include the hunter’s first and last names, address, age, telephone number, and location of hunt.
The contest is open to Vermont hunters 16 and younger. Submissions must be received by December 31, 2010 by 4:30 pm. Email submissions to Ann.Shangraw@state.vt.us or mail to:
