State Awards $45,000 to Four Groups to Support School Recycling and Composting

The Agency of Natural Resources, DEC Solid Waste Program has awarded $45,000 to four nonprofit groups to support school recycling and composting programs across the state. These grants facilitate implementation of Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law, Act 148 of 2012, which requires phased-in recycling and composting statewide over the next 5 years.

"We’ve been working with schools to find out what children eat at lunch, often by looking at what they throw away. Universal Recycling will help those efforts by asking children to sort their food waste from other recyclables and landfill bound materials. This school grant from the state is a great opportunity for our UVM team of students to help schools develop sustainable composting and recycling programs. Our students love spending time in school cafeterias!" said Bethany Yon Phd., Research Associate, Nutrition and Food Sciences, University of Vermont.

ANR awarded four grants of $11,250 each to: the University of Vermont for work with schools in the Rutland and Colchester regions; the Northeast Recycling Council for work with schools in the Bennington region; the Windham Solid Waste Management District for work with schools in the Brattleboro region; and to the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District for work with schools in the NEK region. Each grant requires the grantee to develop and launch school-wide recycling and composting programs in at least four schools. Conversations with schools have already begun in these regions, and programs will be developed and launched over the 2014/2015 school year.

For more information about Universal Recycling, visit www.recycle.vermont.gov or contact your local solid waste management entity for assistance with school recycling and composting.
